Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things, by Ted Naifeh

Title: Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things
Author: Ted Naifeh
Publisher: Oni Press
Number of pages: 128 pages (paperback)
★/5

Synopsis: Courtney's parents have dragged her out to a high-to-do suburb to live with her creepy Great Uncle Aloysius in his spooky old house. She's not only the new kid in school, but she also discovers strange things lurking under her bed.

My review:

These books (I own the first 4 books) are a gift from my godfather. It's a graphic novel in black and white, and it tells the story of Courtney who moves to a rich neighborhood, to live with her great-uncle. But she soon discovers that there are strange things going on.
I really like the dark atmosphere in the book, emphasized by the black drawings (the book is literally dark). The art is just really cool, not  too detailed, not too simple. Just... cool and creepy.
Courtney is a very funny main character, I think anyone a bit introvert can really relate to her, and appreciate her personality.  She's always sarcastic, and even in terrifying situations, she makes me smile. She's a loner, she doesn't have friends at school, her parents are superficial. But she loves her great-uncle, who loves her back, and has friends among the Night Things. Courtney is such a brave and strong character. But still, she struggle  with right and wrong, and she lets her feelings control her, and it makes her human. She's awesome, and she lives amazing things.
The graphic novels are not really long, but they are entertaining,  and very fun to read.

3 reasons why you should read that book :
  • The art is amazing.
  • It has a dark, creepy atmosphere, but still very funny, and not  oppressive.
  • Courtney is a really good character, interesting and sassy.
